NAH mate

It dawned on me the other nite after visting a club in Liverpool called Blue Angel the homogeneity of British mainstream cultural life (in terms of going out as a student/young person). About 75% of the Girls had Jeans, Black Strappy Tops, and Long, Straight Shoulder Length Hair. The porportion of Boys had Jeans, T-Shirts and Spikey-ish hair (gareth gates/ david beckham style). Everybody got drunk, struggled to talk over the booming dance/pop/cheese (delete as appropriate) and danced badly. Its a mockery of entertainment, given the pioneering nature of British youth culture in the past: the 60's, madchester, punk et al. Now its fucking cheese night at RSVP. Given my toker bias, this could be ignored. The alternative is to go to a 'rock' club which is exactly the same but with moshers, which I consider even worse. Disturbed, ironically is the word.

Unfortunatly you are totaly right, one thing I have notice is that the pubs in england can be roughly classified into 2 categories, the traditionnal one and the one aiming for student. The traditional is the old fashion pub with warm athmosphere and always the usual people stuck to the bar. The other kind of pub (generally part of a chain) it try to promote casual sex by increasing the music volume progessively and offering cheap beer and student discount. They are full of the hip clone, that only see Beckam as a life and fashion model.
It's quiet hard to find a place combining youth and character. I see that as a general and international trend, don't damned poor England!

i'd say its a trend of capitalism, but my critisisms are extended to england on the basis of my experiences in the eu.
german bars are different. so are french ones and so on. its the way its part of mainstream culture and the expected norm. my flatmates always moan that i never go out - its what you have to do.
the english drinking culture doesn't really exist any where else. its cultural thatcherism .

Yeah - good observation. Same thing is happening in Australia... the only problem is there are pubs in more affluent areas that used to be awesome hang out pubs - you could cruise on down with mates, wearing what you please, and just have a good time. Now they market the pub to the snotty rich kids of the area, and you get nothing but pretentious cheese and expensive beer. I have made this comment already today, but the individual is dying... society places to much pressure on conformity. I say fudge that.
